Penyarroya Castle

The Islamic and feudal fortress of Sumacàrcer (10th – 11th century) is located on the top of a long and slim mountain close to the village, 150-180 meters above the sea level. It is possible to go to the fortress on foot from the village taking a cosy route, which is perfectly marked and preserved, since it is normally frequented by Sumacàrcer’s inhabitants.

Its location is especially valuable from an ecological point of view due to the concentration of autochthon species in the landscape next to L’Ombria del Castellet. Furthermore, the breathtaking views from the summit should be stressed, as well as the accessibility to tourists, since it is close to the A-7 motorway (València – Alacant).

Indeed, Sumacàrcer’s Town Hall took some measures aiming at sustaining environmental and picturesque values of the village, as well as restoring its historical and cultural heritage.

In recognition of this effort, the Ministry of Tourism of Generalitat Valenciana appointed Sumacàrcer as a touristic destination in the Decree 237/2077 the 28th of December, published in DOGV n. 15.837.
